"Everything that is made beautiful and fair and lovely is made for the eye of one who sees." – Rumi
I recently started a new habit. I have to admit that for most of my life I have not done this. I should have started this habit in the third grade but I didn’t because I was lazy.
I recently started to wash my glasses every morning and then cleaning the lenses.
I know that sounds odd or weird for some of you. This new habit started out of necessity. The way that my current frames were crafted makes them more susceptible to gunk and grim. This pair of glasses gets filthier than any pair I've owned since the third grade.
It’s not pretty.
It’s not convenient.
And I have to be very intentional with the cleaning.
If I don’t.
My vision is impaired by the gunk.
My vision is impaired by the grim.
My vision is not what it could be.
Because this is a new habit I also have to admit that periodically I backslide. I forget to practice what I have set out to do every morning. I find that to simply wipe down my lenses with the cloth that came with my frames is not enough. By using this cloth alone I spread the gunk across the glass leaving me with a film of impairment.
I have to wash my glasses with soap and water to get the gunk off. If I want to see I have to invest some time every day. I have to make the necessary effort to clean the garbage off my glasses. Then I can use the cleaning spray and cloth that came with my frames.
Now, my vision is restored with the help of my clean lenses. My glasses allow me to see the details around me. My frames allow me to see the world in a beautiful, fair and lovely way. I can now see.
After recovering from one of my backsliding episodes I realized something. There standing over my facet and sink, as I cleaned my glasses it "dawned" on me how easy it is to live with the gunk and filth around us. We adopt ideas, habits and the results of situations because we are susceptible to the negativity of the world.
If we do not consciously clean up the filth then we let the filth impair our vision. This impairment not only keeps you from seeing the beauty around us it eventually changes us. It makes us act and react to the gunk that wants to consume us.
Every morning we must rid ourselves of these perspectives by cleaning up gunk so that we can see again. Now as resolutions are being made we can change. At the beginning of this New Year may we strive to clean up our vision. Let us not become the filth around us. Let us change our perspective and influence the world around you.
This year I want to see the beauty that is all around me. This year I want to influence the world and make it a better place. How about you?
Grace and Peace,
Geraldo
